Integrating a bike commute into weekly training

Even though your daily bike commute to work might not feel like a true workout, your body is still absorbing those miles. Always take that into account when considering how many hours per week you want to devote to endurance training.
But since you're already on your bike, you can try to turn your commute into a workout, and accomplish two things at once!
Depending on what workouts you have in your training plan, you could easily fit an intense ride, recovery ride, or tempo ride into your commute.
RECOVERY RIDE: The recovery ride can be shorter or longer than prescribed as long as the intensity is low.
TEMPO RIDE/INTENSE RIDE: The key features of the intense and tempo ride to include are the intervals; you can stretch or shrink the warm-up and cool down to make this work for your commute while keeping the intervals and rest periods the same. This will give a very good workout while saving you time!
